Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an empirically-supported treatment for conduct-disordered young children that places emphasis on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns. In PCIT, parents are taught specific skills to establish a nurturing and secure relationship with their child while increasing their childâs prosocial behavior and decreasing negative behavior.
PCIT is a live-coaching model, utilizing a one-way mirror and a bug-in-the-ear to provide in-vivo feedback and support. It is unique in that it blends a dyadic two-stage operant conditioning foundation with psychodynamic play therapy, social learning theory, and the principles of attachment, all into a 15 week program. It is regarded as one of the top interventions for serving families impacted by physical abuse, as well as for children diagnosed with Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and ADHD.
